Soda Ban in NYC
Seeking to overturn the obesity rate, the Board of Health made a
law that only allows you to purchase a soda that is 16 ounces or less.
Soda is not the only drink you cannot purchase. It is any sugary
drink that cannot be purchased. You are not able to buy them at
restaurants, street carts, or movie theaters. This law was put into
place because the obesity rate has gone up in the last couple years,
so the Board of Health is taking a step towards a healthier New York.
Obesity is a problem, in New York City, that is currently effecting peoples
health. Over 5,000 people die each year from being obese or overweight.
Many people are becoming diabetic due to the oversized meals and drinks.
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg goal is take a leap into the health of the
city. He wants to be the first mayor, to take the first step, into minimizing the
consumption of sugary drinks.
People believe this new law is against your rights as a citizen. At the
same time, there are people that believe this step is needed for the health
of humans. I do agree, that this law is against your rights but at the same time
if you are going to take your rights to far then someone needs to tell you when to
stop. Many people don't know when to stop, which is why there is a law on oversized
sugary drinks.
Small businesses are the big issue. With how small some businesses are,
everything they sell could make or break them. They could lose money on
sales which could shut them down. By putting a ban on soda,
some factories may close down due to loose in sales.
